Axel Salto (1889-1961) is best known for his work with ceramics but he was also a painter and sculptor and is regarded as one of the masters of Danish 20th century design. He worked at Bing and Grondhal in the nineteen twenties and later created a significant body of work at Royal Copenhagen. Salto's innovative work with richly layered glazes is especially notable. His work is included in the collections of many museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
