A uniquely surreal design characteristic of Lauritz Hjorth. Depicting four soaring owls above four muscular tree trunks, a chain of mice circumnavigating the base. Stamped: L Hjorth Bornholm 655

Lauritz Hjorth (1834-1912) studied sculpture at the Prussian Acadmey of Arts and apprenticed at studios in Bohemia, Germany and France before founding his own studio L. Hjorth Terracottafabrik in the Danish ceramic town of Rønne in 1859. Hjorth's classically-inspired vases and objects received awards from numerous world's fairs and cemented his company's reputation for generations to come. His distinctive burnt-black glazed pieces follow Nordic Revival and Jugendstil themes, but have an imaginatively original character all their own.
